Safety Tips

A condition record helps you ask better questions — it never replaces your own judgment. These habits keep private sales safer:
Before you go
- Keep your original conversation on the marketplace where you found the listing where possible. It preserves a record for both sides.
- Never share passwords, account recovery codes, payment-card details, or government IDs through NearbyPro or anywhere else. If the record includes a serial or VIN, match it on the item at pickup.
- Do not send a deposit merely to view an item.
At the meeting
- Use a public, well-lit meeting place when appropriate — many police stations offer safe-exchange zones.
- Inspect the item yourself before paying. Power it on. Test the things you care about.
- For laptops, consoles, and phones: confirm in person that all accounts are removed and the device is factory reset or signed out. Activation locks survive a wipe.
- Compare what you see against what the seller showed in the record. Differences are worth asking about.
Trust your instincts
- If anything feels wrong — pressure to pay fast, a changed meeting spot, a story that shifts — do not proceed.
- Walking away costs you a drive. A bad purchase costs a lot more.
Independent inspectors
A seller-provided record is not an inspection. If you want a person to look at a vehicle, you can ask us to try to find an independent mechanic. Scheduling, fees, and any report are between you and the mechanic. NearbyPro does not inspect the item, does not employ the mechanic, and does not collect their report.
For other goods and house visits, a NearbyPro look is an approved onsite viewer filling our look form on the platform. They call you to confirm a time using the visit address you provided. We email you when the written notes are ready. The look form cannot attach photos. It is not a licensed inspection, a formal home inspection, or a guarantee the item is good. After you read the report, you can rate the onsite viewer.
Remember: a completed NearbyPro record is the seller's own account of the item. It is not an inspection, verification, or guarantee by anyone.
